GNAT Scanner – Privacy Policy
Last updated: [Insert Date]
Thank you for using GNAT Scanner. Your privacy is important to us. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app collects, how it is used, and your choices.
GNAT Scanner is a local network utility that discovers devices and services on your network. It is designed to operate primarily on-device, and it does not collect personal information unless explicitly shared by you.
Summary
• GNAT Scanner scans your local network to identify devices and services.
• Scanning results are processed on-device and are not transmitted to our servers.
• If you choose, you can share or print results using system share/print features.
• The app makes a single request to a third-party service (ipinfo.io) to look up your public ISP/organization name.
• We do not build profiles, track users across apps/websites, or sell data.
Information We Collect
1) Information You Provide
• When you use the share or print features, you may choose to share device discovery results (IP addresses, hostnames, open ports, MAC addresses, inferred vendors, Bonjour services). Sharing is initiated by you and handled by the system share sheet or print controller.
2) Information Collected Automatically (On-Device)
While scanning your local network, the app may collect and display:
• Local IP address and netmask of your device
• CIDR prefix and a best-effort gateway guess
• Devices discovered on your local subnet, including:
• IP address and, where available, hostname
• Open ports or open-port indicators
• HTTP title (if accessible)
• UPnP/SSDP server string (if broadcast)
• NetBIOS name (if discoverable)
• MAC address (when available from ARP cache) and vendor inference (based on OUI or heuristics)
• Bonjour (mDNS) service advertisements on the local network, including service names, types, host, port, and TXT attributes
This information is used solely to present scan results to you. It remains on your device unless you choose to export or share it.
3) Limited Network Request for ISP/Organization Name
To display your public ISP/organization name, the app performs a single request to:
• ipinfo.io/json
This request is made directly from your device to ipinfo.io. The response may include fields like “org”, “isp”, or “asn name.” We do not proxy or store this data on our servers. ipinfo.io may receive your public IP address as part of this request. Please review ipinfo.io’s privacy policy for their practices.
How We Use Information
• To perform local network scanning and show results to you.
• To display your public ISP/organization name using ipinfo.io.
• To enable you to share or print scan results using system-provided interfaces.
We do not use your data for advertising, user profiling, or tracking.
Data Sharing and Transfers
• We do not operate any backend servers for this app and do not transmit scan results off your device.
• If you choose to share results via the system share sheet, the data you select will be sent to the destination you choose (e.g., Mail, Messages, Files, AirDrop, third-party apps). Those destinations are governed by their own privacy policies.
• When requesting ISP/organization information, your device contacts ipinfo.io directly. No data from that request is sent to us.
Data Retention
• Scan results are held in-memory while the app is running and are not persisted by the app unless you explicitly export or share them.
• The app does not maintain a history of scans.
• Any documents you save or share are retained according to the destination’s policies (e.g., Files app, email provider).
Permissions and Platform Services
• Local Network Access: Required to discover devices/services (Bonjour/mDNS, UPnP/SSDP, open ports) on your local subnet.
• Network Access (Internet): Used solely to fetch ISP/organization name from ipinfo.io and for any destinations you choose in the share sheet.
• Printing and Sharing: Uses iOS system controllers to print or share content you select.
The app does not access your contacts, photos, location, microphone, camera, or other personal device data.
Third-Party Services
• ipinfo.io (for ISP/organization lookup)
Please refer to ipinfo.io’s privacy policy for details on their data handling.
Children’s Privacy
This app is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Security
We design the app to process scan data on-device and minimize network transmission. However, keep in mind that network scans enumerate devices and services on your local network. Use this tool responsibly and only on networks where you have permission.
Your Choices
• You can choose whether to start a scan.
• You can choose whether to share or print results.
• You can disable Bonjour browsing from within the app.
• You can prevent the app from fetching ISP info by disabling network connectivity or blocking ipinfo.io at the network level; the app will continue to function without the ISP label.
App Privacy Details on the App Store
Based on the current app behavior:
• Data Not Collected: The app does not collect personal data for developer use.
• Data Linked to You: None.
• Tracking: The app does not track users across apps or websites.
Note: The ipinfo.io request may be considered “third-party data processing” for the purpose of showing your ISP/organization name. We do not receive or store this data.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected in the “Last updated” date above. Material changes will be highlighted in the app release notes where appropriate.
